Lottie's Obituary
Lottie’s life began on February 26, 1919 in East Chicago, the daughter of Michael and Katherine (Pozdal) Grzych. Lottie worked in Detroit during World War II making tanks and there met her future husband, John William Makay, Jr. They were united in marriage on April 11, 1944 in Kalamazoo. Lottie volunteered at Lee Memorial Hospital for many years, and worked for a brief time at Dowagiac Union High School cafeteria. She was a faithful parishioner at Holy Maternity of Mary Catholic Church and volunteered in the Ladies Guild and helped with lunches and dinners. Lottie made the church’s linens and vestments for 35 years. She loved bird watching, and her flower and herb garden. When she was a young lady, she enjoyed playing golf. Her great joy was her family which includes her children Joanne Hiemstra of Dowagiac, Donna Fassler of Belmont, MI, Rita Davis of New Canaan, NJ, Martha Makay of Kalamazoo, Frances (Chris) Maxey of Dowagiac, Angela Makay of Dowagiac, Phillip (Lynn) Makay of Cassopolis and Robert Sink of Dowagiac, 22 grandchildren, two step grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and one step great great grandchild, sisters Theresa (Al) Pilarcik of Shereville, IN, and Rosalie (Dave) Jordan of Cleveland Heights, OH and many nieces and nephews. Lottie passed away on May 14, 2009 at Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital. She is preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers. Her family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. at McLauchlin-Clark Funeral Home where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. led by Father Leo Taubitz. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Holy Maternity of Mary Catholic Church led by Father Taubitz. She will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery, Dowagiac.
