James's Obituary
Jim’s life began on June 29, 1935 in Grand Rapids, the son of Marie Benkhardt. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Ferris State University. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.Jim was the owner of the A and W Root Beer Drive In in Dowagiac for many years. He was also employed by ICG in Dowagiac and worked for General Motors as a young man. Jim also taught at Davenport College for a brief time. He was a member of the Dowagiac Elks and Moose Lodges and enjoyed his many friends in Dowagiac and Grand Rapids. His family includes his brother Robert (Julie) Benkhardt of Wolverine, MI, nephews Kevin (Brenda) Benkhardt of Grand Rapids, Robert (Tammy) Duke of Rockford, Duane Benkhardt of Grand Rapids, Robert Benkhardt of Florida, nieces Deb (Steve) Joseph, and Michelle Voruganti of Florida and several great nieces and great nephews.Jim passed away at his home on Saturday April 18, 2009. He is preceded in death by his mother and a brother Frederick R. Benkhardt. His family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at McLauchlin-Clark Funeral Home (405 Center St. Dowagiac, MI 49047) where his funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. led by Reverend John Kasper of the Dowagiac First United Methodist Church.
