James's Obituary
James (Jim) B. DeVries, 75, of Benton Harbor, passed away at his home on September 10, 2015 after a brief battle with cancer. He had a huge heart, making an impact on countless lives and causes.
A Memorial Gathering will be held Thursday, October 1, 2015 at the Saint Joseph River Yacht Club, 128 N. Pier St in St. Joseph. Friends may gather from 4 PM to 7 PM. Those wishing to sign Jim’s guestbook may do so online at www.starks-menchinger.com.
Jim was born June 29, 1940 in St. Joseph to the late John and Hattie (Moberg) DeVries.
Jim is survived by his sister Delores Schultz of Kettering, OH, his two brothers Bob (Jean) DeVries and Dean (Barbara) DeVries both of St. Joseph and five nieces and four nephews.
After graduating from St. Joseph H.S. class of 58, Jim went on to get his Bachelor’s degree at Western Michigan University. While attending Western Jim worked part time at the John DeVries Agency which was started by his father in 1923. Jim and his brothers took on the ownership of their fathers business. Jim spent 4 years as a LT. in the Air National Guard. Jim carried on his father’s legacy when his brothers pursued other interests. He enjoyed working with the residents and the businesses in his community.
Jim was also a very active member and participant in several local organizations; Krasl Arts Center Board of Directors, Box Factory Board of Directors, he was a Shriner, a supporter of the Curious Kids Museum, Sarett Nature Center and the Humane Society.
He also loved spending time with his dogs, Buck (who passed) and Gus. He loved his family and friends, the outdoors and working the land and sailing.
