Charles Steinmetz

Charles G. Steinmetz, age 53, of South Haven died at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo recently. He was born August 5, 1958, and at peace April 7, 2012. Charles was preceded in death by his loving parents, Mary and Frank Steinmetz, his dear sister, Gloria Furey (Tom), his devoted brother, Thomas (Rita), and his fond nephew, Matthew Steinmetz (Barbara). He will be cherished forever in the memories of his sister, Marianne Spengler (John), his brothers, Frank, Jr. (Donna), Mark (Katherine), Nicholas, and his nephew, David Steinmetz (Alexandra). Charles was diagnosed with schizophrenia shortly before his 15th birthday. Despite being affected by a devastating brain disease, he earned a GED in 1981. At the time Charles was only one of two people diagnosed with the disease in their teens to win the degree since it was first awarded in the state. For that distinction, he received a letter from the governor congratulating him on his achievement. Charles’ life was difficult. But his generous nature, giving heart, and gallant spirit will always inspire us who loved him to be better people. Memorial services in South Haven and Chicago are planned for a later date.
