Tommy Ellis Brown

Tommy's Obituary

Mr. Tommy Ellis Brown, 94, 0f South Haven, was born February 16, 1917 in Paulding, Mississippi to Tom G. Brown and Jinny L. Brown. He was baptized at First Baptist Church at the age of 12. At the age of 21 he joined the Free and Accepted Mason, 3rd Degree master. In 1941 he was drafted in the U.S. Army, World War II, where he served four years. He received a good conduct metal, a rifle sharp shooters metal, three unit campaign citations, H.Q.CO., 98th ENGS, Regiment.

After he was discharged from the Army he joined the VFW Charles Hunt Post, 2024 Chicago, Illinois. He was also a member of the Chicago Urban League, American Red Cross, American Lung Association, the United Way, NAACP and many other good causes. He was employed with the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years as Clerk, Training Instructor, Union Representative of a Black Postal Labor Union, Chicago, Illinois. He received six superior achievement awards.

He moved to South Haven, Michigan where he married Daisy Johnson. He became a member of The First Baptist Church in Covert, Michigan. Tommy was a Chairman of the Trustees Board. He always tried to live a christian life. Mr. Tommy Ellis Brown wrote “If any one care to say anything at my obituary, just say, there lay a man who always tried to help somebody.”

He leaves to cherish his wife Daisy Brown and his five daughters – Barbara Johnson, Joyce Nelson, Pearl Luvene, Rev. Patricia Boyce, and Tracy Brown. Five grandchildren – Erron Johnson, Javona Johnson, Janea Johnson, Lakisha Bray, and Latoya Wilborn, nine great grandchildren and a special friend, James Brown.

Visitation will take place at Filbrandt Family Funeral Home from 6 – 7 on Tuesday, August 16. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 20 at 12:00 P.M. at the County Line Missionary Baptist Church in Vossburg, Mississippi with Rev. Eddie Lee Jone officiating. The wake will be from 11 -12 before the service. Burial will take place at the County Line Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
