Martha "Marty"'s Obituary
Martha June “Marty” Grier, 74, of South Haven, Michigan died on January 1, 2011 at her home. Marty was born on September 8, 1936 to Guy and Frances (Barrett) Reeve in St. Johns, MI.
Marty worked for The South Haven Agency, Citizen’s Bank and Barr’s Printing in South Haven. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in South Haven where she held many positions of responsibility over the years and was church historian. Marty was an avid genealogist and became a resource and arbitrator for other genealogists. She had been President of the Van Buren County Republican Women’s Club and was honored as Republican Woman of the Year in 1993. Marty was active in the community and served on many committees including the 1969 Centennial Festival, South Haven Blueberry Festivals, Miss South Haven Pageants, and packing Christmas packages for soldiers serving overseas. She belonged to the Lovely Ladies Book Club, enjoyed needle crafts and became an excellent quilter, making many beautiful quilts that were given with love to family and friends.
Marty was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters, and her son Richard Wohlfert (2004).
She is survived by her husband David Grier of South Haven, her children, David (Holly) Wohlfert of Kalamazoo, MI, Jo Wohlfert of Lake Ann, MI, and Jeanne (Alan) Lyon of South Haven, MI, and her step-daughters, Judy (Gregg) Jones of Kalamazoo, MI, Kathy (Walt) Sicard of South Haven, MI, and Elizabeth (Larry) Hill of Louisville, OH, fifteen grandchildren, one sister, Margaret (Don) Boyd of St. Louis, MI and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Friday, January 7 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Filbrandt Family Funeral Home. The funeral service will be on Saturday, January 8 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Fisher and Rev. Harold Filbrandt officiating. Burial will take place at Union Home Cemetery in St. Johns, MI. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of South Haven.
