Naomi J.'s Obituary
Naomi J. Ellis, 78, of South Haven went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 31, 2010.
She was born February 2, 1932 in Cheneyville, Louisiana to Donald and Mary (Brown) Johnson.
Naomi was among the first black nurse to graduate from Mt. Sinia Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, Illinois where she continued her career in several nursing positions, moving up to Nursing Administrative Supervisor. In 1980 she joined the staff at Loyola Hospital in Maywood, Illinois. In 1987 she moved to South Haven, Michigan and joined the staff of South Haven Community Hospital for 5 years retiring in 1995. Naomi enjoyed fishing, reading, crocheting and crossword puzzles.
She is preceded in death along with her parents by her husband – Jordan Ellis Jr. who died in 1999. One sister – Dorothy Compton also precedes her.
She is survived by her 2 daughters – Elaine Mitchell of South Haven, Michigan and Cheryl Mitchell-Evans of Chicago, Illinois. 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, close friends and family.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, June 5 at 12:00 P.M. at Emmanuel Community Church with Pastor Darwin Johnson officiating. The wake will be from 11 – 12 at the church before the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or South Haven Hospice at Home.
