George "Sonny"'s Obituary

George Edward Ferguson, 66, of Covert, affectionately known as “Sonny” died Sunday, November 14 at Countryside Nursing and Rehabilitation Community.

He was born April 5, 1943 in Yorkville, Tennessee to Octavius and Ollie (Hollen) Ferguson. Sonny confessed to Christ at an early age and was a member of St. John Baptist Church in New Bern, TN, where he was an usher. Sonny graduated from Dyersburg High School in Dyersburg, TN. He was united in Holy matrimony on April 24, 1964 to Mildred Ann Wyatt. Sonny later joined the U.S. Air Force and served his country in the Vietnam War. After his discharge from the service he worked for Everett Piano Company as a tuner until a disabling injury on the job. He attended College in Muskegon and worked as an auto mechanic. He later moved to Kalamazoo area where he resided for many years.

He is preceded in death along by his parents.

He is survived by his ex-wife – Mildred Ferguson-Henry. Children – Demetrice Ferguson of Detroit, MI, Kevin (Cathy) Ferguson of South Haven, MI, Johnny Gaines of Holland, MI, Anthony Gaines of Ionia, MI, Demitria (Michael) Crayton and Elanda Gains both of Kalamazoo, MI, Anitrius (Billy) Atkinson-Lewis of Covert, MI, Antwan (Shauntil) Atkinson of South Haven, MI, Jimmy A. Jackson of Bangor, MI, Jamie Jones of Niles,MI, Twalla Rogers and Faith (Scott) Harrison both of Kalamazoo, MI, Tiffany Taft and Devon Taft both of Bangor, MI, Brian Heckman of Arkansas, and Aviance Gooden of Benton Harbor, MI. Three brothers – Allen Ferguson of Benton Harbor, MI, Steve Rayford of Covert, MI and Kent Rayford of Anchorage, AK. One sister – Carmen Whitfield-Richards of Jackson, MI. One aunt Ruth Smith of Covert, MI. Forty-one grandchildren. Two great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends also survives.

Wake will be Saturday, November 21 from 12 – 1 at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home with Elder Robert Wyatt officiating. Kindly share your thoughts and memories on the family’s online guest book at www.FilbrandtFFH.com.
