Martha Louise's Obituary
Martha Louise Roberts, 89, of South Haven passed away peacefully in her sleep, Monday, February 16 at Chestnut Field Retirement Community in Muskegon, Michigan.
She was born January 5, 1920 in Columbus, Ohio to Clay and Cecelia (Sheridan) Roberts. Martha graduated in 1941 from Ohio State University with a teaching degree; however, she was immediately employed as “Rosie the Riveter” draftsman in the war effort. She married a fellow Ohioan, Addison William Roberts, on February 19, 1943 in N. Canton, Ohio. Martha lived most of her life in Michigan including 40 years in South Haven. In addition to raising her family, she taught school, worked as a draftsman for Bendix, Corp. in Benton Harbor, and sold World Book Encyclopedia. Martha volunteered many hours to cherished groups including Girl Scouts, First Congregational Church of South Haven, and assisted Addison with his South Haven Chamber of Commerce activities, Scott Club in South Haven became her favorite endeavor for which she served as a past president. She especially enjoyed carpentry, gardening and in later years reading. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is preceded in death along with her parents by her husband – Addison Roberts who died in 1983 and one grandson.
She is survived by her children – Judy (Jeffrey) Jazdzyk of Muskegon, Michigan, Steve (Connie) Roberts of Colorado, Lynn Roberts of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Nancy (Michael) Gaynor of Illinois and her sister Ruth (Heinrich) Leuchter of Columbus, Ohio. Seven grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and other relatives also survive.
Memorial services will be Saturday, February 21 at 3:00 P.M. at the First Congregational Church of South Haven with Rev. Jeffrey S. Dick officiating. Family will receive friends from 4 – 6 in the church fellowship Hall following the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Scott Club of South Haven, the American Lung Association or First Congregational Church of South Haven.
