George Nielsen

George H. Nielsen, 79, of South Haven died Friday, February 15 at his home.

He was born September 15, 1928 in South Haven, Michigan to George and Edna L. (Bagent) Nielsen. George served his country in the U.S. Navy. George married Lorraine Schlaack on September 16, 1950 in South Haven, Michigan. George worked for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #131 in Kalamazoo for over 20 years retiring in 1977. George was a member of the American Legion Post #49 and Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church both of South Haven. At the church, George served as an usher for many years. George was an avid sportsman. George loved all of the Detroit professional teams. He also an avid South Haven Rams fan attending as many of the games as he could. He also enjoyed deer hunting with his good friends Harold and Jack in the U.P. George also loved to play golf. He played in a couple of foursomes on a regular basis.

He is preceded in death along with his parents by his daughter – Lori Nielsen who died in 1998.

He is survived by his wife – Lorraine Nielsen of South Haven, Michigan. One son – Charlie (Jill Koole) Nielsen of South Haven, Michigan. One brother – James (Kathy) Nielsen of St. Louis, Missouri. Two sisters – Norma Johnson and Judith (Dick) Birdwell both of Englewood, Florida. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Visitation will be Saturday, February 23, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church. The memorial service will begin at 11:00 AM at the church with Rev. Robert Linstrom officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery.
