Lillian Irene Starks

Lillian Irene Starks, 87 of South Haven died Tuesday, November 20 at home.

She was born February 27, 1920 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Harley W. and Marcia Belle (Middleton) Shafer. Lillian graduated from Allegan High School in 1938. Lillian attended Western State Teacher’s College in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She then taught in a one room school from 1940 – 1941. Lillian married Julius P. Marks in 1943. Lillian was a secretary at South Haven Junior High School from 1964 - 1980. She married Chester Starks on May 7, 1970 in South Haven, Michigan. Lillian was a member of First Congregational Church in South Haven.

She is preceded in death along with her parents by her first husband – Julius P. Marks in 1964 and her second husband, Chester Starks, in 2003. One brother – Gerald Shafer also precedes her.

She is survived by two children – Dolores (Kenneth) Stephenson of Knoxville, Tennessee and Norman P. (Dawn) Marks of Coldwater, Michigan. Two step-children – Sandra (Wayne) Winzenz of Raleigh, North Carolina and Robert L. (Arline) Starks of LaPorta, Maryland. Four grandchildren – Laura Stephenson, Jon Stephenson, Gretchen Marks and Danielle Marks. Three step-grandchildren – Benjamin, James and Andrew Winzenz. Eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, November 23 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Congregational Church U.C.C. with Rev. Jeffrey S. Dick officiating followed by a luncheon at the church. Burial will take place at North Shore Memory Gardens in Hagar Shores. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the First Congregational Church.
