Father Frank's Obituary
Father Frank J. Burger, 94, of South Haven went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, November 16 at River Ridge Retirement Village in South Haven.
He was born February 19, 1912 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Frank and Mae (Wolke) Burger. Father Frank attended St. Ann Elementary School in Hamilton, Ohio and graduated from St. Gregory Seminary High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Frank then attended St. Gregory Seminary and Mt. St. Mary Seminary in Norwood, Ohio. Father Frank graduated with an A.B. Degree from St. Gregory Seminary and was Ordained on May 26, 1938 in Lansing, Michigan by the Most Rev. Joseph H. Albers. Father Frank was a Catholic Priest in the Kalamazoo Diocese for 68 years serving at St. Philip Church in Battle Creek, Chaplin at Fort Custer in Augusta, St Mary of the Assumption in Three Oaks, Chaplin at Leila Post Hospital in Battle Creek, St. Basil Catholic Church in South Haven and St. Cyril Catholic Church in Grand Junction. Father Frank loved the kids and enjoyed showing old reel to reel movies in the church basement.
He is preceded in death along with his parents, Frank and Mae Burger, his brother- George Burger, his sister –Mary Anne Vaughn and her husband – Joseph Vaughn, and his nephew – Mike Vaughn.
He is survived by one niece – Rosemary DuVal and husband Wendall, three nephews – Frank (Debbie) Vaughn, Pat (Frances) Vaughn, and Tony (Julie) Vaughn. He also has six great nieces – Rise, Anita, Mary Alice, Jillian, Allison and Natalie. Six great nephews – Ryan, Richard, Zachary, Andy, Aaron and Adam. Two Great great nieces – Brandi and Madison and three great great nephews – Zachary, Kyle and Thomas. He is also survived by his friends and caregivers – Jeff, Joanne and Roger Edwards and Don and Carolyn Sappanos all of South Haven.
Visitation will be Sunday, November 26, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home. Visitation will also be Monday, Nov. 27, from 4:00 to 7:00 in St. Basil with the rosary at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, November 28, at 11:00 AM at St. Basil Catholic Church with Bishop James Murray presiding. Burial will take place at Peninsula Memorial Park Cemetery in Newport News, Virginia. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Basil Educational Endowment fund.
