Bernard L. Byrd, 75, of South Haven died Wednesday, June 21 at home.

He was born January 16, 1931 in Roseland, Arkansas. Bernard married Betty Tripp on February 5, 1954 in South Bend, Indiana. Bernard served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Bernie worked as the Manager of Operations at South Haven Community Hospital for 22 1/2 years retiring in 1989. He also worked in maintenance part time for the past 13 years at Save-a-Lot Food Store. Bernie was a member of the Lakeshore Church of Christ in South Haven. He umpired and coached baseball and softball for 40 years in the South Haven and Bangor area. He enjoyed bowling.

He is preceded in death along with his parents by his two sisters – Dorothy Harrelson and Baby Byrd.

He is survived by his wife – Betty Byrd of South Haven, Michigan. Two sons – Richard and Jerry Byrd both of South Haven, Michigan. Two daughters – Patricia (James) Martin and Robin (Tom) Ramsey both of South Haven, Michigan. Five grandchildren – Ed (Paula) Martin, Allen (Kelaine) Martin, Tricia (John) Schupra, Jason Byrd and Heather Ramsey. Ten great grandchild. Four brothers – Alvin Byrd of Siera Vista, Arizona, Welton “Doyce” Byrd of Cleveland, Ohio Paul Starnes of Malden, Missouri and Roger Byrd of South Haven, Michigan. Six sisters – Mildred Newell of Chattahoochee, Florida, Patricia Ballard of Bangor, Michigan, Karen Davidson of Iowa, Mary Collins of Bellview, Ohio, Kathy Byrd of New Portland, Maine and Jeanie Wolf of South Haven, Michigan. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Visitation will be from 10 – 12 on Saturday, June 24 at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 12:00 P.M. at the funeral home with Rev. Holger W. Neubauer officiating. Burial will take place at Chambers Cemetery. Military Honors will be presented by the American Legion and VFW Honor Guard. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to South Haven Area Hospice or Al-Van Humane Society.
