Mary Jean's Obituary
Mary Jean Harbin, 76, of South Haven, died Monday, December 23, 2013 at the Country Side Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in South Haven. She was born March 16, 1937 to Julius and Paula (Radtke) Allers in South Haven.
Mary Jean was a 1955 South Haven High School graduate and married Jack Harbin on June 18, 1955.
She worked as a secretary for South Haven Public Schools at Central Elementary School and later as the secretary for the First English Lutheran Church for 19 years. She was a lifelong member of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church of South Haven. Mary Jean loved to sew and spend time camping and boating with her family. Her faith was strong through all of her surgeries and difficult times. She always remained positive and optimistic.
Mary Jean is survived by her husband – Jack Harbin of South Haven; children – Terri (Nicholas) Ilg of South Haven, Kathy VandeWouwer of Kalamazoo and Jeanine (Kirk) Hoffman of Jackson; Grandchildren include– Tristin (Steve) Fellows, Kristan VandeWouwer and Kaitlyn and Alysa Hoffman. She had one great granddaughter – Ayralynn Fellows. Also surviving one brother – David (Bette) Allers of South Haven and three sisters –Judy (David) Schlaack and Paula Filbrandt both of South Haven and Margaret LeBaron of Tucson, Arizona. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Visitation will be Sunday, from 2 to 4 PM at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home in South Haven and on Monday from 10 to 11:00 AM at Peace Lutheran Church. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Monday at the church with Rev. Dr. Matthew Deames officiating. Mary Jean will be laid to rest at McDowell Cemetery in Casco Township.
