Leroy's Obituary

Leroy A. Green, Sr., went home this date, August 4, 2014 in Kalamazoo, MI.  Leroy was born September 6, 1916 in Memphis, Tennessee, the only child of Hattie Blackburn and Thomas Green.  He moved with his mother to Chicago, IL., after the death of his father.  After this move, Leroy worked numerous jobs during the Great Depression while attending DuSable High School where he obtained  his high school diploma.
 
Leroy met and married the love of his life, Iris Dell Golden in 1938.  They celebrated 63 years of marriage and had two children.  Leroy moved his family to Covert , Michigan where he operated Green’s Super Market from 1955 until his retirement in 1990 in Covert. Leroy was known for his employment and mentoring of numerous community youth.  He taught them life skills and meaningful work ethic.  He was a strong supporter and advocate of Covert Community Schools.
 
Leroy served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theatre, in the U.S Army Air Corp., where he was a heavy equipment mechanic, pharmacist technician and barber, saw duty at Iwo Jima, and received an honorable discharge.  Leroy also served on the draft board.
 
Leroy accepted Jesus Christ as the head of his life as a child, and was a supporting member of Covert Community Church.
 
Leroy is survived by his daughter, Julie Green, and son, Leroy A. Green Jr., many nieces, nephews, and former employees and friends who thought of him as a special man, and will be sorely missed by those who knew him.  He was a lifelong baseball fan, and loved the Cubs and White Sox.
