John's Obituary

 

John Wesley Slater, 67, of Lacota, MI, passed away Monday, January 26, 2015 at his home. He was born May 16, 1947 in Kalamazoo, MI, to John and Betty (Needham) Slater. John graduated from Bangor High School. John served his country in the Navy in Vietnam.   He married Ellen (Harrell) Slater on August 4, 1979. During his life, John had many jobs including the co-owning Pine Grove Bowling Alley in Gobles, working at Perrigo in Allegan for 5 years, and most recently, driving for Chet Nichols Auto Parts in Bangor. John was the commander of the VFW Post 6134 in Pullman and a former pastor. He was also an avid sports fan, his favorite team being the Detroit Lions.

John is preceded in death by his father- John Slater and step-mother Nancy. His mother- Betty Clark and step-father Pete. One grandson- Scotty Forstner.

He is survived by his wife- Ellen. Children- Kelly Forstner of Grand Junction, MI, Barry (Dodie) Forstner of Allegan, MI, Wendy (Mark) Johnson of Grand Junction, MI, Cheryl (Bob) Anderson of San Antonio, TX,  Amy (Tony) Snyder of Otsego, MI, Christina (Dale) Mangold of Allegan, MI, Frank (Josephine) Hardester of Grand Junction, MI. 21 Grandchildren. 5 Great-grandchildren.  Brothers- Randy (Grace) Slater of Henderson, NV, Jerry Slater of Schoolcraft, MI.

John will be laid to rest at the Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project at P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
