Mattie's Obituary
Mattie Mae West, 94, of Grand Junction, Michigan passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at the Countryside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in South Haven. She was born February 22, 1921 to Clifford and Mary (Rhodes ) Montgomery in Memphis, Tennessee. Mattie married Henry E. West on September 5, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois. Upon moving to Grand Junction, Michigan she became a Charter member of Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership and founder Rev. William Bronson. Many years later she became a founding mother of Greater Faith Community Church under the leadership of Pastor Bernice Thomas. In addition, she was an Order of Eastern Stars affiliate. Mattie retired from the Campbell’s Mushroom Factory of Fennville, Michigan in 1980 after several years. She loved to garden; especially enjoyed tending her flowers. Mattie also enjoyed completing puzzles, as well as playing card games. She loved to cook, known especially for her dressing, yeast rolls, and cakes. Mattie enjoyed riding the Allegan County Senior Services bus weekly. But most of all Mattie enjoyed being with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents and husband of 25 years – Henry E. West who passed in 1977 and brother – Clifford Montgomery, Jr. who passed in 1979.
Mattie is survived by her children – Donald West of Pensacola, Florida, Ronald (Reyna) Jenkins of Bay City, Michigan, Nancy West of Grand Junction, Michigan, and Angela (Mark) Wheeler of South Haven, Michigan. She has 11 grandchildren; Misty, Ronald, Barry, Ronald Jr., Rita, Tiana, Tondrea, Isley, Autumn, Donald Jr., Donte and 21 great grandchildren.
The wake will be held from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at the Greater Faith Community Church 03219 CR 687, South Haven, MI 49090. Funeral services will follow the wake at 12:00 PM at the church with Pastor Bernice Thomas officiating. Mattie will be laid to rest in the Lee Township Cemetery.
