Don passed away July 1, 2017 as a patient in the South Haven Rehabilitation and Nursing Home. He was born June 9, 1922 in Pearl, Michigan, the son of Lyle and Anna (Johnson) Hoyt. He lived most of his life in Pullman, Michigan where in the early years he worked in the family creamery business. He served as a Corporal in the United States Army in World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service. After the war ended, Don worked in the construction trade. Don was in charge of building many of the early rest stops along I-94. He never officially retired and was always proud of his work ethic and reputation.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of twenty years Joan Hoyt, sons Donnie (Patsy) Hoyt, Dr. Timothy (Vicki) Hoyt, daughter Kathy Loyd, stepdaughters Beth (Scott) Tameling and Jill (Ralph) Rueda, Grandchildren David Hoyt and Krista, Michael (Sarah) Hoyt, Susie (Jeremy) Price, and Jennifer Loyd; Brittney, Briauna, Briley, Joshua (Misha), Johnny, Jordan, Joseph, and Shannon Hoyt step grandchildren Andrew, Sarah, Noah Tameling and Jonathon Rueda. Great grandchildren Zachary, Kendyll, Tiffany Hoyt, Avery, Kayden Hoyt, Bryce Campbell, Richard Moore, Olivia Price, and Caleb Vincent Hoyt, great-great grandchildren Anastasia Moore and Gauge Donald Hoyt. Also surviving are half-brother John Hoyt and sister Donna Schall. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Marion, Grant, Dale, and Russell and his wife of 51 years, Patricia Walsh Hoyt, son-in-law Richard “Hoss” Loyd.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home in South Haven. A celebration of life will follow visitation at 1:30 PM at the funeral home with Pastor Cleophus Johnson officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Don’s memory to the American Legion Post #49 for the wall, 129 Michigan Avenue, South Haven, Michigan 49090, the Moose Family Center, 1025 E. Wells, South Haven, Michigan 49090, or Caring Circle Hospice at Home, 05055 Blue Star Highway, South Haven, Michigan 49090.
