Donald's Obituary

Donald E. Spencer, 92, passed away on Jan. 10, 2018, in Sarasota, Fla.

He was born in South Haven, Feb. 13, 1925, son of the late Lloyd and Corlan Spencer. He graduated high school in 1943, then worked on the family farm one year, before serving two years in the U.S. Army as a sergeant during World War II, stationed in Yokohama and the Philippines.

He attended Michigan State University, was a life member of Michigan State Horticulture Society and International Dwarf Fruit Tree Association. He also served as school board president, bank trustee, and president of Production Credit Union, where he introduced Gerald R. Ford as the key speaker at their annual meeting.

On March 13, 1954, he was united in marriage to Mildred Helene Remley who survives along with his four children: Cindy (Al) Johansen, Brian (Peggy),Kerry, Chris (Steve); seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Dorothy Scott and Barbara Bridges.

He was preceded in death by two grandsons, and his first wife, Elizabeth Seiler.

When not managing his 550-acre fruit farm, he and Helene spent many enjoyable years traveling in their fifth wheel through 46 continental states, fishing trips through Canada and several trips abroad to Europe and Asia. After retiring from the centennial Spencer farm he resided in Sarasota, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at Bay Village, 8400 Vamo Road, Sarasota, FL on Monday Jan. 15th, 2018 at 2:30pm.
