Robert's Obituary

Robert J. “Big Luke” Luchies, 86, of South Haven, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2018 at his home under hospice care with his family at his side. He was born June 12, 1932 to Elmer and Ann (Schuiteman) Luchies in Fremont. Robert married Winifred DeGroot on September 14, 1956 at the Christian Reformed Church. They shared 54 years in marriage before her passing in 2010. Robert attended Alma College before being drafted into the Army for the Korean War. After returning from a time in Florida, Robert began work at Kalamazoo Tool and Die. He later went on to Wells Manufacturing in Three Rivers before becoming a head hunter at MSS in Kalamazoo. He last worked for Lindemulder Construction as a finish carpenter before his eventual retirement. Robert enjoyed fishing, wood working, croquet, and golf. Most of all, he loved and cherished spending time with his family.

He is preceded in death along with his parents and wife by two sons – Rodney and Russell Luchies and siblings – Eleanor VanAntwerpen and Randy “Luke” Luchies.

Robert is survived by his daughter – Rose (Jim) Lindemulder of South Haven, daughter-in-laws – Sandra Luchies of Kalamazoo and Betty Luchies of Three Rivers, brother – Jerry Luchies of Hartford, 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Many in laws, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the First Assembly of God in South Haven. Funeral services will follow visitation at 11:00 AM at the church with Pastor Eric Jarvis and Rev. David Deters officiating. Contributions may be made in Robert’s memory to the First Assembly of God’s Personal Care Pantry or to Christmas Hope.
