Keith's Obituary
Keith Earl Nelson, 77, of South Haven, passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at his home under hospice care. He was born March 1, 1942 to Frank and Lena (Banta) Nelson in Breedsville. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Michigan and then a Master’s Degree at Eastern Michigan University. Keith married Linda Gould on December 18, 1971 at the Church of the Epiphany Episcopal Church in South Haven. They shared thirty years in marriage before her passing in 2001. Keith taught for many years at Bloomingdale Public Schools. He also served on the South Haven Public School Board. Additionally, he also taught classes at Lake Michigan College following his retirement. Keith was active in the church and enjoyed singing in the church choir and the South Haven Men’s Chorus. He was an avid reader who enjoyed literature, movies and cars. He was also involved with Our Town Players. He loved his pet dogs including his most recent dog, Daphne. Keith was a proud University of Michigan alum who enjoyed holding football season tickets for many years.
Keith was a “father” to six exchange students who were his children – Luis of Salvador, Brazil; Thomas and Libor of Prague, Czech Republic; Bjorn of Oslo, Norway; Marcelo of Rio De Janiero, Brazil; and Atilla of Budapest, Hungary.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and siblings – Virginia Hosier, Margaret Rhoades, Betty Rhoades, Floyd Nelson, and Dwight Nelson.
Keith is survived by several nieces and nephews, a brother in law and sister in law along with many, many friends.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, May 31, 2019 at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home in South Haven. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at the Church of the Epiphany Episcopal Church with The Rev. Michael J. Ryan officiating. A luncheon will follow services. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Keith’s memory to the Church of the Epiphany 410 Erie Street, South Haven, MI 49090.
