Elizabeth's Obituary

Elizabeth H. Mohr, age 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 11, 2024, in Bridgman, Michigan. She was born in 1930, to Samuel and Mary (Winder) Heaton in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1960, she married the love of her life, William “Dave” Mohr, and they spent 59 years together until his passing in February 2020.

A joint memorial service for Liz and Dave is planned for Saturday, June 22nd, at 10:30 am at the First Congregational Church of St. Joseph, Michigan, and followed by a reception there. Feel free to share a memory with the family and keep up to date on service information at ww.starks-menchinger.com.

Liz grew up on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Easton, Maryland as the youngest of five sisters. Betty, or Bets, as she was called by them, thoroughly enjoyed being on and in the water there and maintained a lifelong love for her home state and the Eastern Shore. She was a graduate of the St. Mary’s School in Peekskill, New York, and Smith College, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. After Smith, she went to work as a financial securities analyst for the First Boston Corporation in New York City and continued that career until her marriage to Dave. While working at First Boston, she and a group of seven other women working in the securities industry, founded the Young Women’s Investment Association, which later changed its name to the Financial Women’s Association of New York. The organization has continued to advocate and create opportunities for women in the financial industry ever since.

Liz married Dave in 1960 and within a year they moved to SW Michigan to start a business and a family. Liz dedicated her next 20+ years to raising her kids, giving them her endless supply of love, encouragement, support and positivity. During this time she also became a tireless supporter of the Benton Harbor Public Schools, the Benton Harbor Public Library, on the board of which she served as Benton Township’s appointed representative for more than two decades, and the Benton Harbor Sports Boosters.

Liz was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Benton Harbor and subsequently of St. Joseph. She volunteered regularly at local charities including the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen, and the Samaritan Center, which recognized her with its Samaritan of the Year award.

Liz was a life-long supporter of Smith College and its commitment to educating young women. She loved attending her Smith reunions and meetings of the Grand Rapids Smith Club and cherished her life-long friendships with her Smith classmates and fellow alumnae.

Liz loved playing tennis well into her 80s and absolutely adored her fellow “tennis ladies” at the South Shore Racquet Club and their monthly lunches. Liz also deeply loved Lake Michigan and its beaches. Growing up on the water in Maryland, she often said she couldn’t ever see herself living anywhere that was far from the water. After her kids had grown up, Liz loved traveling to visit them and their children, her sisters and her many cherished nieces and nephews and their kids around the country.

In addition to Liz’s gifts for communicating her affection for and genuine interest in the lives of others, Liz was an incredible baker, transforming the fruits of southwestern Michigan into delicious cherry pies, blueberry kuchens, strawberry shortcakes and blackberry flummery (Dave’s favorite).

Although Liz’s memory and physical capabilities were diminished in recent years by dementia, her sweet smile and the twinkle in her eye remained almost to the very end.

The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at Woodland Terrace and to Sarah Rhein, Teagan Rogers, and Maria Kampe of Private Duty Home Healthcare who helped care for Liz over these last five years. We will be forever grateful. If you would like to remember Liz, please consider making a donation to the Benton Harbor Public Library or Smith College.

Liz is survived by her three children Bill (Carol), Ed (Geri) and Liz/Betsy, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
