Shirley's Obituary
Shirley Doris Garey, 91, of St. Joseph, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Hanson Hospice Center of Stevensville.
Shirley was born on February 12, 1927, in Benton Harbor to William and Josephine (Roettger) Ferrell. She graduated from Benton Harbor High School and the University of Iowa where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. She was an active member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and enjoyed playing the bagpipes in the University Scottish Highlander’s Marching Band. On July 12, 1949, Shirley married the love of her life, Robert Garey, also of Benton Harbor. The two were happily married for nearly 52 years before his passing in 2001. Being a wife, mother and grandmother were the roles she cherished above all else. A shining example for all who follow in her footsteps. She took pride in her home and being a part of the family business, Garey Roofing Company. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church and volunteered in many local philanthropic organizations.
Shirley is survived by her children, Linda (David) Ramig of Springboro, Ohio, Michael (Elizabeth) Garey of St. Joseph, and Craig (Wendy) Garey of Morrison, Colorado; grandchildren Dan, Meg, Lauren, Ryan, Alex, Katie and Mitchell; and 10 great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 4 PM at the First Congregational Church, 2001 Niles Ave., St. Joseph. A reception will be held following the service at the church. The family encourages all who’s lives have been touched by Shirley to join the family in recognition of her long and joyous life. Memorial contributions may be made to The Readiness Center of Benton Harbor and the Hanson Hospice Center of Stevensville.
