Dorothy “Dot” Hoover, 81, of St. Joseph, left this life surrounded by her loving family, Monday, March 4, 2019 at her home.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, March 8, 2019 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, with Rev. Adam Bohland officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Dot was born December 10, 1937 in Benton Harbor to Delbert W. & Ruth (Johnson) Reed. She attended Benton Harbor High School, Class of 1956. On August 24, 1957, she married Larry Hoover at the First Congregational Church in Benton Harbor. Dot graduated from Twin City Beauty College in Benton Harbor and spent 30 plus years as a hair stylist in St. Joseph, many of those years at Metzing Hair Care. Following retirement, she spent nine years as a bus driver for St. Joseph Public Schools.
Dot was an active member of her Church-Zion United Church of Christ in St. Joseph. She enjoyed working with the soup kitchen, ladies prayer group, stewardship committee and many fundraising activities. She joined the Stevensville American Legion Post #568 Auxiliary in 2005 where she served in many different aspects and held the office of First Vice-President for several years. Dot was particularly dedicated to serving on the legion’s funeral detail, doing meal preparation and fundraising. She was devoted to the Veteran’s, Legion Post #568, Post #568 Auxiliary, the SAL Squadron #568 and the Legion Riders. Dot had a love for travel, sporting events, concerts and wine tasting with her husband and family.
Dot is survived by her husband Larry; her children-Mike (Pam) Hoover of Stevensville, Sherrie (Mark) Groves of Baroda, Jeff (Tracy) Hoover of Roselle, IL; three grandchildren-Brandon (Kala) Hoover, Ashley (Jason) White & Lauren Groves; four great-grandchildren-Reese & Hudson White, Brody & Brycen Hoover; her brother Richard (Hertha) Reed of Lugoff, SC; her sister Connie (Floyd) Lippold of Auburndale, FL; and numerous nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Kara Beth Hoover in 1992, siblings-Maynard, Robert, Ralph & Roland Reed, & Mildred Bryant, and two nieces-Tammie Visocchi & Sandra Ruznak.
