Arlie J. “Jack” Overhiser, 88, of South Haven passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Borgess Hospital on April 25, 2012.
Jack was born on September 13, 1923 to Arlie and Amelia Overhiser of South Haven. He was a country boy who loved to fish and play in the woods surrounding the family farm in Casco Township. He showed an early talent for construction by building shacks in the woods near his home. He was a graduate of South Haven High School where he was the pride of the state champion apple judging team in the Future Farmers of America.
A proud Navy veteran of World War II, Jack was the “oil king” on the U.S.S. Prince William, an escort carrier that served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of war. Following the war, Jack married Mary Ann Pringle, also of South Haven on March 8, 1947. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with family.
Jack was a skilled roofer and carpenter who worked for Drenth Roofing Company until his retirement. Throughout his life, Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating with good friends and family. He will always be remembered for his love of and loyalty to family and friends, his honesty and remarkable skill as a craftsman. Jack will forever be remembered for his blue eyes and bright smile.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ann, his son Steve (Margee) Overhiser of Hamilton, Michigan and his daughter Jo Ann (Gary) Tipton of Benton Harbor, Michigan, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and also a good friend - Ed Sheputis of South Haven. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harry and Roger and good friends George Nielsen and Harold Holman.
Visitation will be on Saturday, April 28 from 9-10 am at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home. Funeral service will begin at 10 am with Rev. Jeffrey S. Dick officiating. Burial will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to the Food Pantry at First Congregational Church UCC of South Haven.
