George Cornelius's Obituary

George Cornelius Main age 89 of South Haven, Michigan and formerly of Detroit. George died Thursday, December 15, 2011 at the River Ridge Retirement Community in South Haven, Michigan.

George was born Sept. 15, 1922 in Detroit , Michigan to George and Nellie (Sheehan) Main. George was raised in an Irish speaking household. He graduated from St. Cecelia’s Catholic Schools and was an outstanding player on their football and basketball teams. George had several college scholarship offers but decided to enlist in the military. He served his country during World War II in the Army Corps. of Engineers in the European theatre. George married Doris Sullivan on June 21, 1947. They had been married 63 years when Doris died in 2009. George retired while he was a Captain on the Detroit Fire Department. He retired from the fire department after many years of service and later moved to the South Haven area to be closer to his children. George enjoyed all Nortre Dame and Detroit sporting events. He also enjoyed men’s fast pitch softball. He was also active in the Knights of Columbus, the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, and the American Legion. George served on the Fire Fighters Fund Association Board of Trustees and was the elected President in 1973. With all of his involvement in his community and church, George was mostly dedicated to taking care of his family. A devout catholic, George was a proud member of St. Basil’s parish in South Haven.

George is preceded in death by his wife, Doris Main. Daughter, Sandra (Trafton) Main. Granddaughter, Carli (Trafton) Cullen and grandson, Joe Campbell.

George is survived by three children – Patricia (Hilda) Main of San Diego, California, Suzanne (Benno) Trenkle of South Haven, Michigan and Michael (Brenda) Main of South Haven, Michigan. Nine grand children and four great grand children.

Visitation will be Friday, December 16 from 6 to 8 pm at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be Saturday, December 17, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Basil Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Robert Flickinger officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery, South Haven. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Legion Post 49 for a fireplace fund.
