Howard's Obituary

Howard D. Murphy Jr. passed peacefully October 14, 2011 after an extended battle with an uninvited “House Guest” that invaded his South Haven, MI home. The police and pest control companies proved to be of no service apprehending the menace. Although able to confide in his comrades over morning coffee at the Village Market Beanery, Howard knew this pebble on life’s yellow brick road would have to be fought by him and him alone. Over the next few months he pondered solutions while continuing to do the things he enjoyed most; like touring on his motorcycle for extended jaunts both far and near, bird hunting, fly-fishing, gardening, and writing short stories to name only a few. Then one day while sitting on his sofa, watching the Fox News Channel (btw topping the list of his favorite things), it occurred to him the best strategy to eliminate the pesky thing was by gaining it’s trust through offerings of daily meals consisting of “steak”. He did so over the following weeks until the final meal which was laced with poison provoked the intruder causing it to attack. Neosporin ®, nor gauze, nor adhesive tape was able to save Howard from the blinding bite. Howard spent his last days comfortably at Hospice of Holland, a beautiful property by the way, while the many attractive nurses doted over him.

Born October 11, 1944, in Kenilworth, NJ the son of Howard D. Sr. and Hazel (Decker) Murphy; Howard graduated from Union College, Barbourville, KY and retired from the South Haven School System. He is survived by his two fantastic daughters: Kimberly “butt-head” Murphy and Andrea “no-fun-at-all” Novarro; as well as his handsome son-in-law Steven Novarro and two spectacular granddaughters: Elli and Olivia Novarro; all whom continue efforts to eliminate the elusive “House Guest”. At a date to be determined, steak will be served for friends and family. Send no flowers; please make a donation of time or treasure to a charity of your choice.
