Joseph Mandel's Obituary

Longtime South Haven resident and beloved uncle, brother, and friend, Joseph Mandel Walker, 71, died peacefully of natural causes, August 6, 2009, at South Haven Hospital.


Mr. Walker was born October 24, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, to Arthur DeWitt Walker, Sr. and Josephine Elizabeth Walker. He was the youngest of the three boys. The family relocated to South Haven when Mr. Walker was in elementary school. He graduated from South Haven High School, attended University of Michigan, and then went to work for the United States Civil Service in Benton Harbor and retired in the early eighties. Mr. Walker was a gifted tailor and designer of clothes and was passionate about gardening and left behind many beautiful gardens at his home. Joseph loved to create, whether it was in the garden, in the kitchen or at the sewing machine. He brought joy to his friends and family as he was generous in sharing his talents. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a loyal friend. He will be missed greatly by his family and everyone who knew him.
Mr. Walker was predeceased by his father and mother and his two older brothers, Dr. Arthur DeWitt Walker, Jr. and James Henderson Walker.
Mr. Walker is survived by his nieces and nephew, Victoria, Andrea, Leslie, Melissa, JaRee, Jain and Akita Walker, all children of his two brothers. He is also survived by his loving sisters-in law, Dr. Jeanne M. Walker, Althea Burns and Dr. Retia Scott Walker and his devoted longtime family of friends, especially Naxie Holland.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Mr. Walker’s home located at 17774 69th Street on M-43 in South Haven, Michigan, beginning at 1pm to form a procession to travel to Monk Cemetery for the graveside ceremony. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Monk Cemetery Geneva Township. Pastor Darwin Johnson will officiate. After the ceremony, an informal reception for family and friends will be held at Mr. Walker‘s home.
