Virginia's Obituary

Virginia Emily Ann Kick, 90, died at the Countryside Nursing & Rehabilitation Community in South Haven, Michigan on Wednesday, December 31, 2008.

Virginia was born on July 13, 1918 in Oak Park, Illinois to George and Florence (Ernst) Houdek of Chicago IL. She worked for many years at various occupations: the hospitality industry, as a worker at Michigan Fruit Cannery / Comstock Michigan Fruit; Caring for children at Hartman School during lunch hour; as an employee at L.C. Mohr High School and also at the Listiak Blueberry plantation.

Virginia served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II serving in North Africa and Italy. This was the first Women’s Army Corps ever sent overseas and Virginia was most proud of her contribution to her country during the War. Virginia was seen everyday walking or riding her bike all over South Haven, wearing her Chicago Cubs jacket, as she was an avid Cubs fan. Travel was also a favorite pastime and after retirement Virginia liked to take scenic tours of America via the Greyhound bus. Virginia’s ever present smile with a kind word for everyone she met will be missed in the South Haven area.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two sisters – Dorothy Riley and Georgia Zirbel. Two brothers- George Houdek and Daniel Houdek.

Virginia is survived by her two daughters – Ginny Kick of Chicago, Illinois and Kate (Mark) Krenn of Jacksonville, Florida and one son – Fred (Tamara) Kick of South Haven, Michigan. Two grandchildren- Jared and Erica Kick. One brother – John Thomas “Tom” (Carolyn) Houdek of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Sister-in-law - Virginia Martin of grand Junction, Michigan. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Visitation will be Wednesday, January 7 from 6 – 8 P.M. at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home. Services will be held Thursday, January 8 at 11:00 A.M. at the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Linstrom officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to World War II Women’s Veterans Memorial, Al-Van Human Society or the American Diabetes Association.
