Gordon Dykstra

Gordon J. Dykstra, 78 died on December 21, 2008 at his home. He was born on June 1, 1930 in South Haven, Michigan to Ebert and Barlena (Brinks) Dykstra. Gordon was known as “Grumpy” to his friends. Gordon married Betty Laabs on November 10, 1951. Gordon worked as a logger with his father and brothers as they supplied the Dean Basket Company. Gordon drove truck for Canonie’s for 22 years and was a member of the Teamsters Union #7 in Kalamazoo. He then worked at Fleming Bros. Oil Company for 11 years retiring in 1995. In his retirement he then worked for Walt Sicard Car Company and Seeley Wright as a driver. Gordon was a member of the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church where he was a former usher and member of the Loyals.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a son – Douglas Dykstra in 1957, his brothers – Sherman Dykstra and John Dykstra and one sister – Sharlene Gray.

Gordon survived by his wife – Betty Dykstra, his children – Ken Dykstra and Karen (Mike) Verdonk of South Haven, Michigan, Keith (Tammy) Dykstra of Hartford, Michigan and Kyle (John) Teichow of Allendale, Michigan. Nine grandchildren – Adam (Wendy), Trevor, Jenna, Eric, Jordan, Jarred, Emily, Becca and Molly. Three great-grandchildren – Connor, Ethan and Aidan.

Visitation will be Saturday, December 27, from 9:30 – 11:00 am with funeral service starting at 11:00 am at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Robert Linstrom officiating. Burial will take place at the Peace Lutheran Memorial Garden. Memorial contributions may be made to Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church.
