Captain Crisler left a lasting imprint on Carmel Fire Department, whether it be starting a fish fry, serving on technical spec committees for fire apparatus, and the retirement axe awarded to all retirees who complete 20 or more years of service. John taught me not to assume that others understand my thoughts or intentions and encouraged me to communicate effectively and seek feedback. R.I.P. Captain John Crisler. Assignment complete. Job well done! Condolences to Val and children.

To Val and family, Words cannot express the sadness that fills my heart of the passing of John. A great husband, a very proud father, a man of his word, who spoke the truth and believed in helping those who were in need. A fierce joke player who could ever be topped. Always on his game and a damn good Captain. Rest in peace John, your final call has come, may God grant you peace and rest in his kingdom. Prayers to you Val and family. Know that you are not alone in your sorrow for we have lost a great man here on earth and God has gained an angel who will show how one puts 110% in his job and things he loves. Captain Brett Overmyer, Retired Carmel Fire Department.

Love and Light to you all! What a privilege to be called John's friend and embraced as family. He sure could cook, entertain, build beautiful bird houses and lend a hand wherever it was needed. He is the definition of a GIVER! I cherish his French Toast and Grilled Corn on the Cob. Forever thankful for his presence!

There aren't too many people in life you can call a true friend. John was mine, I'm struggling to find the right words to say. From the first day I met him 27 years ago in recruit class to two years ago when he told me he was volunteering on a sail boat on Lake Michigan . ( I believe I said but John you can't swim and he said " awe it will be alright they have life jackets") I missed seeing him when I was up there for harbor fest however he made a point to call me and explain why he wasn't there. But that was John . Val I'm sorry for your loss, John was a true friend, a great firefighter and made me a better person. God bless you and your family.

Any day that my path crossed John's was a good day. His humor and kindness made him a special friend. I knew him as a shipmate and when he was around I felt safe. John had my back. If I feel this bereaved at the suddenness of his passing I can not begin to imagine the lost you and your family feels. Please accept my sincere condolences.
