Roderick's Obituary
Roderick C. Halstad, 86, of South Haven, passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at the South Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in South Haven. He was born June 5, 1930 in Glen Arbor, Michigan to Oscar and Anna (Solem) Halstad. Rod was a 1948 graduate of St. Joseph High School. He played on the 1948 Class B State Champion Basketball team. Rod went on to Hillsdale College where he earned his bachelor’s degree. At Hillsdale, Rod played basketball and ran cross country. Also, he was a member of the ATO fraternity. Rod served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. Roderick married Mary Lou Kleaveland on February 9, 1952 at Saron Lutheran Church in St. Joseph. Rod later went on to get his master’s degree in education from WMU. Rod taught and coached boys basketball in Bangor and Charlotte. Rod also was the high school principle in Covert and Benton Harbor. He also served as the director of secondary education at Benton Harbor Schools. At two different times, he was the head coach of the Hillsdale College men’s basketball team. Rod was a member of the VFW and Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church both in South Haven. In his spare time, he loved to fish on Lake Michigan. He had many boats over the years.
He is preceded in death along with his parents by his daughter – Charisse M. Halstad who passed in 2011 and his brother, Owen Halstad.
Roderick is survived by his wife – Mary Lou Halstad of South Haven.
Visitation will be held Monday, November 28, from 12 to 1:00 PM at the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Haven. Memorial services will follow visitation at 1:00 PM with Pastor Travis Wilson officiating.
