Dear Mary Lou, Sherri and I are sorry to hear of Coach Halstad's passing. We think and refer to him often. We often reflect on the life lessons that he shared with us. I will always appreciate how he cared for us at Hillsdale. God Bless You. Dave Springer

I was sad to hear of Rod's passing, but what an accomplished life he lived! I was friends with Charisse during and after high school and then had the good fortune of getting to know Mary Lou better when I was subbing in the Fall of 1974 at Bangor Jr. High where she taught. It was she who told me about a position open in Benton Harbor and Rod who hired me for that full-time position in Jan. '75 in the Benton Harbor area schools where I began my teaching career. To say that you both were instrumental in my life is an understatement. God bless you, Mary Lou.

Dearest Mary Lou, Geoff and I send out sincere condolences to you at this time. Rod was such a fine, strong man, and you are a fine, strong lady. Your marriage of 64 years is a great example to many people. Always remember that, as it should bring you comfort. May friends and other family and community members also be a comfort and a blessing to you at this time. We promise to stay in touch and come and visit you before long. I have many good memories of visiting your home on Evergreen Bluff Drive when Charisse and I were youngsters and during our college years. The three of you were a very close family and it was always inspiring to hear of your travels together. It was beneficial to both you and Rod that the art scholarship in Charisse's name was established, as four worthy young women were grateful recipients, and you were able to witness that. I will never forget Rod's big, broad smile, ever. He was, and still is, a man among men. May God bless you, always. Love, Anne

We were so sorry to hear of coach Halstad's passing. I never could say Rod just out of respect even after many years of conversations at coaching clinics and basketball tournaments. I learned much about basketball strategy and the physiology of coaching while playing for him at Bangor High for 3 years. One of the many memories I have as a player is the fact that although I won several awards for free throw and field goal accuracy " I COULD NEVER BEAT COACH IN A FREE THROW CHALLENGE OR A GAME OF HORSE." Prayers to you Mary Lou and thanks for being family friends. Don &LeWain Crandall
