Tim and Family, On behalf of the South Haven/Van Buren Co. Convention & Visitors Bureau; please accept our deepest condolences. Toni has been a volunteer with the visitors bureau for the past ten years. Her work with so many of the area non-profits has made a lasting impact, and has certainly made the world a better place! With deepest sympathy, Lisa Shanley

Toni was a wonderful teacher of the game of bridge and an even greater person in the game of life. She always had a smile for every one whom she met and a positive outlook on every situation. She constantly maintained a pleasant, happy attitude along with a sensitive sense of humor. It was a true pleasure to have known her and to have had her as my bridge instuctor. South Haven has lost one of its most popular citizens who was also a strong supporter of the arts in our community.

We will all miss Toni's smiling face as she made her way through downtown on her scooter. She always had a kind word for everyone she met. I know in the comming months I will still be looking for her. South Haven has lost a very special person.

I first knew Toni in the 1980s as a colleague in the mathematics department at Bloomsburg University. Her warmth and inclusiveness drew many people to her and I was one of these. In my view she also was fearless. While I continued to contemplate an action, she moved quickly toward righting an injustice. I have learned from her to be a bit more brave and bold. Toni and I share an interest in the arts – for her, painting; for me, poetry. Each of us, too, has had an ongoing curiosity for learning new things. And so our last time together was a museum visit – on a lovely spring Thursday (March 1) I met Toni and Tim (and a couple other students from their Road-Scholar group at the Peabody School of Music) at the Baltimore Museum of Art. We combined chatter – as I caught up on news of JJ and the girls, etc, etc -- with awed reaction to the outdoor sculpture and the Cone collection. And, instead of a picture of Toni, my camera holds a photo (posted) of mosaic tiles that could serve to illustrate geometric symmetries in an abstract algebra class. Dear, dear, Toni. Yours was a life lived well. I will miss you much and remember you with love.

Tim and J.J., My memories of time spent with Toni are long and varied. Hours together on the AAUW Public Policy Committee, playing bridge, great discusions at book group, shared times talking-as we both loved to do--about so many things. I'll miss it all.

Many of us in the Mathematics Department at Eastern Michigan University knew Toni through Tim, and would see her at the annual meeting of the Michigan Section--MAA, coordinating the AWM breakfast. Toni was such a warm and generous person, and a great advocate for both women and mathematics. She will be very much missed. Our sincerest condolences to Tim and family.

Toni became an intagral part of the Michigan County Social Services Association (MCSSA) almost immediatedly. We valued her intellegence, her commitment to helping others and her very wry sence of humor. The MCSSA family will truely miss her. We wish all of you the very best and extend our heart felt condolences. Take care and God bless.

Tim Sorry to hear of Toni's passing. I often thought of her and tried to get in touch, but had no success. I was thinking of her just last week. Remember the fun times, Siena, Bridge, and your Christmas parties where she would coerce me to play the piano, if ever so poorly. I am doing okay - work every day at the funeral home. Guess I never retired. Trust Toni enjoyed her retirement. Would love to hear from you. Marilee

I really respected this woman; she set the bar high. In book group, I couldn't wait to hear Ton's comments, always an insightful perspective. She was an inspiration in the Diversity Coalition, an outstanding teacher, a formidable Bridge player, and an exemplary leader. All this, as well as, a strong, compassionate humanist. A huge loss. Thank you, Toni, I am a better person for having known you.

My thoughts and prayers are with Tim, JJ, and family. I learned much from Toni as we worked together at Siena Heights and in Zonta of Lenawee. Her passion and concern for people came through in her many activities. I am grateful that our paths ran together for a time.

I can't get over how lucky I was to have met Toni, soon after my recent full time move to South Haven. Toni was a great role model, a witty, intelligent, and talented woman who gave of herself to others. My deepest sympathies are extended to Toni's family and friends.

Tim, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Toni. I worked with her in Zonta. She was so bright, creative, and warm. She inspired all of us by her work ethic and her cheerful demeanor, even when she was suffering pain. I will keep you and JJ in my prayers, as you both try to survive such a great loss.

Tim and JJ, Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Toni was a good friend and a great sister Zontian. We had some memorable times serving on the District 15 board together, I always had fun when Toni was around! I'll never forget riding on a luggage cart in the parking lot of The Bavarian Inn in Frankenmuth while Toni towed us to our car:-). Whenever I think of Toni...that's what I will remember!

To Tim and the Carroll Family: Although it's been some time since we've been in contact, I often think of you and Toni and what you brought to Project SEED. I wanted to express to you my deepest condolences on the occasion of Toni's passing. I note in her biography that "her main passion was in helping others", and about that I have no doubt. Clearly she helped many students --- as did Tim ---- through Project SEED, but many many more as you both went on to teaching at the university level. I will continue to remember Toni and you in the coming years. Again, my most sincere thoughts are with you in this undoubtedly difficult time. Sincerely, Wayne Patterson

I served on Zonta's District XV Board of Directors with Toni from 2000 - 2002. I'll always remember her as bright, funny, and clever; always ready with a limerick. At our last convention together in Frankenmuth, MI, Toni towed a hotel luggage rack through the parking lot while a few of us board members rode on it and waved like princesses on a Homecoming parade float. There are scores of similar stories. Great times with a great lady...she will be missed.

I had the pleasure of meeting Toni through the Michigan County Social Service Association. I should have known her, we grew up in the same city and attended the same high school. My sister was best friends with her sister. I was so impressed by her intelligence and her willingness to right a wrong. She truly cared about people and when people met her, they cared about her. I will miss sitting next to Toni at MCSSA meetings and benefitting from her wisdom. Your loss is our loss and a loss to her community. I will miss her.

Dear Tim, JJ and family, It was with surprise and sadness that we opened the obituary sent by JJ. One of our fondest memories was of the beach in South Haven when we visited with Toni and you Tim; JJ was very young. You were all very welcoming. We remember Toni's infectious laughter; her heart was always open to all. She will be missed. Love and hugs to all of you during this sad time in your lives.
