"The Final Inspection" The policeman stood and faced his God, which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward now, policeman. How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My church have you been true?" The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, And sometimes I've been violent, because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny, that wasn't mine to keep.... Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got just too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear. If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don't.....I'll understand. There was silence all around the throne where the saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, for the judgment of his God. "Step forward now, policeman, you've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets, you've done your time in hell."

Clara Jean and family, So sorry for your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Blanche and Eldon have been friends of yours for years, so I have known you all my life. I think I remember meeting you guys at the monthly "chicken fries" at the Vets Club when I was little. I remember Bill most when he was on the police force and seeing him over the years around town and while I worked at the discount store. Sometimes he was there on official business and sometimes just shopping. He was a nice man that I always had a lot of respect for. Once again, we are sorry for your loss.

My condolences to Clary and family. I knew Bill for about 50 years and had the privilege of serving with him at SHPD for some years. Former Chief Roby was fond of saying that Bill was the best juvenile officer he had known in his own long career. On those rare occasions when we "doubled up," Bill would say, "Gal, let's go out and deter crime." Watching him work a case was a better education than all the college classes I attended. Bill was a fine and officer and he made a difference, a good difference in this world. Alays, Gloria Veltman

To Clara and family, my sincerest and heartfelt condolences on the passing of such a fine man, Bill Crow. I was just a young rookie, 23 years old, when I worked my first day as a South Haven Police Officer with Sgt. William Crow. I worked with Bill for the next 7 years until he retired in 1984. I visited him and Clara just a couple months ago at their home in Mitchell brothers and had a nice visit, then said goodbye; I guess I knew. Godspeed, Bill, old friend. Say hi to Larry, Ray, Glenn, Lewie and Bobbie - all members of South Haven's best.

We were so sorry we returned to South Haven to find Bill had left us. Clary and Bill gave us inspiration as a couple with their devotion to each other and kindness to us and others. So many wonderful memories deer hunting with Bill and Buck! I watched Bill shoot his first buck from high on a hill about 60+ years ago. We know you have a mountain full of wonderful times Clary and our prayers are with you. Phil I personally recall both you and Bill being faithful about decorating Dorothy's grave Memorial Day until we moved back to S.H. to do it ourselves. Always thinking of others and very low key about it. God Bless you and thank you for your selfless lives. Lynne

Sorry to hear of your loss, Bill was a wonderful person. He was a good listener too. (I still remember the day I was walking my dog at 430am, downtown, and looking at the jewelry in the windows) He drove by on duty, and told me I should be home in bed, that it was ok to walk the dog closer to the house. My life was touched by the kindness of he and you, his family. Char
